Writing Contest Guidelines

The Writing Contest comes with a few guidelines and small print. This posting is not the final version of the Guidelines. Come to the SKILL Centre (or email writing@keyano.ca) for the hard and final copy of the Contest details.

In the meantime, the following information outlines the contest basics:

To participate entrants must:

be currently enrolled as a student at Keyano College [Fall 2006 or Winter 2007 sessions]

write an original ‘blog’ – a series of a minimum of 5 entries in a journal format (no more than 3000 words total) on the topic of literacy




Official Rules and Regulations for the
Keyano College Writing Contest


Eligibility: No purchase necessary. The peer tutoring draw, open to students of Keyano College only, commences at 12:00am on September 1st, 2006 and runs through to 11:59pm April 13th, 2007. The ‘blog’ contest, open to students of Keyano College only, commences at 12:00am on September 1st, 2006 and runs through to 11:59pm February 9th, 2007. Contestants must be enrolled in Keyano College Programming either in the fall 2006 or winter 2007 sessions. Eligible persons cannot be employees of Keyano College (or tutors in the SKILL Centre). The contest and the random draw are void where prohibited by law.

To enter:

Blog Contest: Submit an original composition composed of at least five (5) individual entries, no more than 3000 words total, based on the topic of literacy. Each submission must include a final, neat copy of your entries (typed, double spaced preferred) and a completed official contest entry form which includes your name, contact information, and Keyano program information. Contest entry forms can be obtained at the SKILL Centre. All entries must be original work that has not been (nor will be) submitted for grading. All entries must be submitted to the SKILL Centre. Entries are limited to (1) per person. Students can also enter the peer tutoring draw as many times as they receive qualifying tutoring [limited to (1) entry per day]. Winners of the Blog contest are not eligible to win the peer tutoring draw

Peer Tutoring Draw: After accessing tutoring services at the SKILL Centre, complete the official contest entry form which includes your name, contact information, and Keyano program information. Contest entry forms can be obtained at the SKILL Centre from your tutor. All entries must be officially notarized by a SKILL Centre employee or tutor. All entries must be submitted to the SKILL Centre. Entries are limited to (1) per person per qualifying tutoring visit per day. Students may enter once (1) daily as often as they receive qualifying tutoring assistance.

Prizes: There are 7 prizes available.
Upgrading Division:
i. 1st prize: Ipod Nano,
ii. 2nd prize: $75 gift card from Coles,
iii. 3rd prize: $50 gift card from Coles.
College-wide Division:
i. 1st prize: Ipod Nano,
ii. 2nd prize: $75 gift card from Coles,
iii. 3rd prize: $50 gift card from Coles.
Peer Tutoring Draw:
i. Grand prize: Ipod Nano

Prize Administration: Winners of the judged portion of the contest will be chosen by members of the Keyano College Writing Contest Selection Committee. Entries will be judged on the basis of originality, structure, written expression and the adherence to contest rules. Evidence of tutorial assistance or improvement throughout the writing will be taken into consideration. All decisions of the Selection Committee are final. Judged writing contest winners will be notified by phone and/or email during the week of March 12th. If, for any reason, a selected entrant cannot reply before March 29th, his/her entry will be disqualified and the entry judged the next best will be awarded the prize. Before being declared a winner for any prize, winning entrants will be required to sign a Declaration and Release Form, confirming compliance with the contest rules and acceptance of the prize as awarded.
The winner of the draw will be chosen by an employee of Keyano College. The draw will be held April 13th, 2007. If, for any reason, a selected entrant cannot reply before April 20th, his/her entry will be disqualified and the entry judged the next entry drawn will be awarded the prize. Before being declared a winner for any prize, winning entrants will be required to sign a Declaration and Release Form, confirming compliance with the contest rules and acceptance of the prize as awarded. All prizes will be awarded.

Conditions of Participation: By participating in the Keyano College Writing Contest, each entrant accepts and agrees to these official rules and the decisions of the SKILL Centre/CUE/Keyano College employees, which shall be final and binding. The college will not be responsible for late, lost, misdirected, falsified, incomplete or destroyed entries and all such entries are void. The college does not assume any responsibility for incorrect entry information; technical malfunctions; human or technical error; or any combination thereof. All entries become the property of Keyano College and none will be returned. This contest is subject to all Federal, Provincial, Territorial and Municipal laws. Contact any SKILL Centre staff member (or writing@keyano.ca) for clarification of the information contained in this document.

Keyano College has the exclusive right to publish, in part or in whole, any written entries received through this contest, in any and all Keyano College publications.

By entering and accepting a prize, each winner consents to the use of his/her name, written work, and photographs without further gain.

Keyano College reserves the right to terminate this contest at any time and in any way, without prior notice.

Privacy: Keyano College respects your right to privacy. Unless otherwise indicated, any information provided will only be used to assess the entries, execute the contest and evaluate literacy at Keyano College. By providing personally identifiable information, you consent to the collection of this information by Keyano College for the purpose of administering this contest. Except where required by law, Keyano College does not disclose entrant information to third parties.
